How To Give Yourself A Summer MOT (Make Over Time)

Around the world, and in the west especially, we live in a maintenance culture.  In the UK, where I currently live, as the seasons change from Spring to Summer there’s a flurry of activity, from visiting DIY stores to decorate the house and overhaul the garden, to car maintenance such as buffing tyres and shining paintwork. In fact, we’re all required by law to give our cars an annual MOT!

However, and I’m sure you’ll agree with me, whether it’s maintenance of the house or the car, we feel good when the job is done, even when there’s considerable cost or effort involved.

So, here’s my question?  When it comes to maintaining ourselves, which is in my opinion the most important maintenance we can do, why do we feel guilty about the effort and/or cost involved? After all, isn’t self-care an investment in our personal development and well-being?

It’s a well-known fact that when we look good, we feel good. So, this summer, why not give yourself a personal MOT?

Unsure where to start? Here are some of our top tips:

Update your wardrobe

Ask a friend, book a stylist or consult a personal shopper to help you find clothing in colours and styles that suit you and feel good.

Start exercising regularly

Whether it’s working with a trainer, joining a gym or simply taking a walk around the block after dinner, the important thing is to start moving.

Change your diet

It doesn’t have to be a massive change – maybe replace sweet snacks with fruit, or eat more vegetables. Small changes now can lead to more changes further on.


Your wardrobe, your dresser, your make-up bag, your handbag, your kitchen cupboards… Whatever you clear out, it will make you feel good. Plus you can use all that wardrobe space for something new!

 Get a new look

Book an appointment for a free makeover at a department store make-up counter. A bright new lipstick can make a surprisingly big difference to the way we feel.

Change your hairstyle

Messy hair, don’t care? Talk to your hairdresser about your style, your hair, and what you’d like to achieve for that perfect summer look.

Pamper yourself

Book a spa appointment, a day, or even a weekend, if you’re feeling particularly flush. Look out for online offers that can make a relaxing getaway more affordable than you might think!

So, there you have it – our list of some of the ways you can give yourself an MOT. And remember, never feel guilty about spending time on self-care. It’s an investment in a most valuable creation. YOU!
