Six Stylish Layers To Take You Through Autumn
As the seasons change from summer to autumn it can be challenging to dress for the weather. Mornings are cool yet by the afternoon it can be quite warm, meaning the jumper which felt so cosy at the start of the day can be stifling by lunchtime! We would recommend wearing light layering pieces at this time of year, and there are several stylish options when it comes to keeping cool (and staying warm!) Here are some of our favourites:
Practical and stylish, a gilet preserves heat in the body’s core while allowing our arms (and armpits!) to breathe as the day warms up. Whether padded or corduroy, shearling or faux fur, a gilet can be worn with skirts or trousers, and will take you through the week to the weekend.
The denim jacket
The first denim jacket was made in 1880 as a utility garment for engineers and labourers, but has come a long way from its humble origins. Now an evergreen fashion staple, denim jackets can be cropped or oversized, shaped or boxy, fringed, beaded or studded. We love a simple shaped style in dark denim – looks wonderful over just about anything! Invest in one now and wear it for years to come.
The poncho has seen a fashion resurgence in recent years, and with good reason – a poncho is an easy to throw on layer over just about anything. Shapes can be sleek or tasselled, in materials ranging from wool to suede, all with a wonderful flow.
A relative of the poncho, but more flexible in terms of styling, a wrap can be worn may different ways. Drape it, fix it with a jewelled pin, or simply wrap it around your shoulders – the choice is yours. Invest in cashmere, get cosy in wool, drape yourself in jersey and, when the day warms up, fold it up and put it in your bag. Easy!
The trench coat
Originally designed over a century ago as a raincoat for serving army officers, the trench coat is now a universal fashion statement for both men and women. Available in just about every fabric from silk to leather, a trench coat can be buttoned up against cooler weather or left open on warmer days. Burberry is the benchmark, of course, but if you’re not feeling quite as spendy, Marks and Spencer sell some great versions.
The bomber jacket
Another garment originally designed for the military, the bomber jacket has come to the fashion forefront in the past few years. Like the trench coat, the bomber comes in a variety of fabrics, perfect for changing weather and temperatures. Style yours with trousers or a knife-pleated skirt for a fashion-forward autumn.
And there you have it! Six stylish layers to get you through the seasonal change. Which one will you choose?
